Over the years Americans have become acclimated to the insincerity that many politicians exhibit. They masterfully skate around the issues and almost never let their true opinion on a subject come to light. On a rare occasion a politician will let the world know his or her true feelings. This was certainly the case when Congresswoman Maxine Waters spoke before the Stonewall Young Democrats in Los Angeles on September 8, 2018. While her speech rambled on at times the central theme of her message focused on her hatred for the President. She became decidedly un-civil as she proceeded to call him a liar and a “deplorable, despicable human being”. Several eye opening remarks from the Congresswoman made this disdain for Trump, his administration and supporters very evident. While she initially denied culpability concerning inflammatory statements she made earlier this year in which she called for the harassment of cabinet members and supporters, she quickly reversed course and claimed to have sanctioned other instances of harassment by saying “I do that all the time, but I didn’t do it that time”. As she started talking about the President himself, her tone became more serious and stated “I wake up in the middle of the night and all I can think about is i’m going to get him, get him, get him, get him”.
As Mrs. Waters speech progressed, her desire to see Trump removed became more apparent. The Congresswoman claimed that some of her peers in the Democratic Party had asked her to tone down her talk of impeachment. Waters claimed to have refused these requests, and as a way of signaling her defiance repeated the word impeachment multiple times to enthusiastic applause. She also minced no words about Vice President Mike Pence and proudly proclaimed that “We’ll get him too” in the event that he ascends into the Presidency.
Speeches such as this from an arguably influential U.S. Representative should be cause for alarm. Her support of impeachment proceedings are based on political differences instead of proven illegal activities. This not only threatens the electoral process but it also waters down the basic Constitutional rights of all Americans. With all that is happening in the world today, her short sightedness and hatred my have dire consequences for the country and it’s basic institutions.
